Employee engagement efforts often fail because they are too top-down and often a little paternalistic. A more engaging culture needs to be developed, one where managers are encouraged to be more engaging and where they learn how to engage employees effectively. In addition, it is important to teach employees how to engage themselves. This means a bottom-up as well as a top-down approach to improving employee engagement.
